Screen Recorder

I am looking for a screen recorder. Free would be nice. I want to be able to perform basic functions. I need to be able to select only part of the screen.
I would like to have a small control panel that i could have to the side of the area that I am recording to pause, record, stop, etc.

It would also be great to be able to add text to the video.

This is for documentation for an open source project, so free or cheap is ideal.

Hey I wanted to know if whether or not a screen recorder exists.. Like a screen saver but only spontaneous. Nice thread and thank you for the link my friend.
