hal.dll problem

windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<windows root>system32hal.dll.
please re-install a copy of the above file What can I do?

What to do? Install a copy of the file. What else? Don't you believe the message?

Let's hope you have your Windows XP CD ready! And that no more is missing. The cause of this file disappearing isn't clear.
