Also, is it necessary to then make DVD's or can the AVI or MPEG file be accessed off a portable hard drive thru one of those new box things (WD Live, Google TV, Apple TV, Roku, etc)?

you should understand. If these are commercially produced tapes, some of them you may not be able to copy because of copy protection on those tapes. As for format, I probably won't use either; I would copy it directly to a dvd recorder instead. This method will save lots of time. If..however you are going to use a media device, then either avi or mpeg doesn't matter because each has its own advantages and disadvantages. Personally I wouldn't recommend doing this at all. But if this is just for fun or experience the go ahead and give it a try (any method at all). Have fun!
